Steps to becoming a volunteer!

Volunteering includes the individual or collective efforts of willing individuals, known as volunteers, to action ways that work toward the betterment of oneself, communities, society, and the other world.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in your community and make a difference. If you want to become a volunteer first of all you have to be sure about yourself that you are ready to give your time and energy to the work which you will get. Volunteering in a foreign country is another issue and in that case you have to be ready to live in a different country and work in different area which is not based on your culture and you must be ready that maybe you will face a lot of news, cultural differences, ideas and people.

Once you are sure that volunteering is something that you want to do there several must do steps that you need to think about.

1.Identify the skills and knowledge you can offer – many volunteer opportunities ask that individuals have certain skills. For example, schools are searching for a volunteer likely to have previous experience with kids. Assess the skills you currently have to see if there are specific roles you could volunteer for.

2. Create a volunteer resume – Creating a volunteer resume that lists your previous experience as a volunteer as well as your skills and interests can be a great asset when applying for opportunities. A resume allows the organization to quickly see what you have

3. Research volunteer opportunities using a volunteer site – Best way to find appropriate volunteering projects is to use European Solidarity Corps platform.

4. Get all the relevant details for the volunteer position, apply for the volunteer position and wait for the magic to happen.

Also really important part of searching volunteering projects is to find a trustful website and don’t register and don’t give your personal information to the wrong page. For this to make sure you can find some people who participated in a same project and ask them about project. If you are travelling from Non EU country do not apply for the volunteering opportunity if you will not have enough time to get Visa before the start of the project, as later you might encounter with problems on the boarder.

Another really important part of making decisions to become a volunteer is to choose duration of your volunteering work. For some people maybe duration will be short, for some maybe it’s will be so long. You have to prepare yourself from the beginning if you will go for a long time term project, especially in a foreign country. In that case you have to be sure that you can live far from your family, community and friends.

All in all, think wise, do research and challenge yourself.
