Bielsko-Biała – ‘the city of 100 industries’

As you may know Poland is divided into administrative division, a voivodeship – is the highest-level administrative division of Poland, corresponding to a province in many other countries. My volunteering is in Silesia and in this article you can discover another great city of the Silesia – Bielsko-Biała.

Bielsko-Biała as a city has had its name since the first of January 1951 when officially two places merged together which were located on opposite banks of the river Biała that was also the border between Śląsk (Silesia) and Małopolska ( lesser Poland). This city has unique history because of the location and because of the name itself – both words Bielsko and Biała stands for the word white. Two names comes from two cities which have different backgrounds.

The Adventure Begins !

Hello,

my name is Kristina and I am 29 years old, I am a bit older, but not so old that I would not accept this unique opportunity to become a volunteer through the European Solidarity Corps. I come from Slovakia, specifically from the city of Ruzomberok, it is a small town in the heart of Slovakia under our highest mountains (High Tatras). Although the Slovak Republic belongs to the groups of younger states in Europe, the territory of the country has a long and complex history, which left many monuments. Slovakia was created on January 1, 1993, before that, we were Czechoslovakia (since 1918). Slovakia has beautiful nature, we have many mountains, forests, mountain lake (glacial origin) and national parks, We also have many caves, more than seven thousand caves have been discovered in Slovakia so far! Slovakia has World’s highest number of castles and chateaux per capita, 180 castles and 425 chateaux in a country with the entire population far smaller than the city of New York. Who is a fan of old horror movies, there is also Nosferatu’s castle in Slovakia 🙂 Nosferatu (1922) were shot in Orava Castle.

I am a person who is positive about every aspect of life, I have a sense of humor and I am an optimist. I have two big passions, movies and books. I love reading books, especially fantasy  and sci-fi but also thrillers. My favorite writer is Oscar Wilde,( I read everything from him), also i like J. R. R. Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, and J. K. Rowling . The books are a wonderful way to transport me to a different place and era without actually leaving home. I’m a big fan of movies and TV series, I like almost all genres of movies ,except romantic movies 😀 . I also enjoy artistic activities such as drawing (especially digital) or clay modeling, I like to do activities that keep my hands busy.

I studied sculpture and art history at university, but I was more interested in the digital sphere than classical sculpture. After school, I completed a short-term volunteer service  in Poland, in the town called Rzeszów (located in the east of Poland), I really liked this experience,  but 2 months passed quickly. After some time (after Covid and an internship in Prague), I decided that I would go to volunteer service again, but this time for a long time. My project is called “Opportunities ahead! “ in an interesting industrial  city Rybnik, I will be working  at the Historic Mine Ignatius (Zabytkowa Kopalnia Ignacy ). I am looking forward to working in this organization, from the first sight I was captivated by the atmosphere of this place.
